THE 11TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (AUG 31ST)

An Icon of the Lord Jesus’ Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican

THE MISSAL MASS PROPERS FOR THE DIVINE LITURGY OF ST. JAMES OF JERUSALEM ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE ANCIENT CHURCH THE WEST

INTROIT
Psalm 68

God in his holy habitation, he is the God that maketh men to be of one mind in a house: he will give strength and power unto his people. Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

COLLECTS

O God, who declarest thy almighty power chiefly in shewing mercy and pity; mercifully grant unto us such a measure of thy grace, that we, running the way of thy commandments, may obtain thy gracious promises, and be made partakers of thy heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O Almighty God, Who bestowed Thy heavenly grace upon the desert dweller, St. Moses the Black, to leave behind sin and iniquity, and to become an everlasting memorial of the reconciliation of God and man; So, too, O Lord, grant us to see the fullness of the fruits of repentance, and lead our steps into the path of salvation on which Thou didst guide St. Moses, so that we all may live with Thee forever. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord, Who livest and reignest with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

O Almighty God, the light of the minds that know Thee, the life of the souls that love Thee, and the strength of the hearts that serve Thee: Help us, following the example of Thy servant St. Augustine of Hippo, so to know Thee that we may truly love Thee, and so to love Thee that we may fully serve Thee, Whom to serve is perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Who livest and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

O Almighty God, who didst call thy servant John the Baptist to be the voice of one crying in the wilderness, to prepare the way of thy Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ; Grant that we, being strengthened by his example, may with boldness proclaim repentance and speak the truth in love, even unto death, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O Almighty God, who didst raise up thy servant Aidan to be a shepherd of thy people, walking humbly in the way of the Cross, and proclaiming the Gospel of thy dear Son with meekness and holy zeal; Grant that we, following his example of piety and compassion, may with steadfast hearts labor for the salvation of souls, and by thy grace turn many unto righteousness; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

OLD TESTAMENT READING
Leviticus 11–12

And the Lord spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat. Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean. And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled. But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.

And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest: who shall offer it before the Lord, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female. And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

NEW TESTAMENT READING
1 Corinthians 15:1–11

Brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; by which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: and that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve. After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

EPISTLE
1 Corinthians 16

Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem. And if it be meet that I go also, they shall go with me. Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia: for I do pass through Macedonia. And it may be that I will abide, yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go. For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to tarry a while with you, if the Lord permit. But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost. For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.

Now if Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do. Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren. As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity. I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) that ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth. I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied. For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such.

The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house. All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss. The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand. If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

GRADUAL
Psalm 28

My heart hath trusted in God and I am helped: therefore my heart danceth for joy: and in my song will I praise him. Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my Strength: think no scorn of me: my God, go not far from me.

Alleluia, alleluia. Psalm 81. Sing we merrily unto God our strength, make a cheerful noise unto the God of Jacob: take the psalm, bring hither the tabret. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
St. Luke 18:9–14

At that time, Jesus spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

OFFERTORY
Psalm 30

I will magnify thee, O Lord, for thou hast set me up, and not made my foes to triumph over me: O Lord, my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

SECRET

O God, who hast ordained a sacrifice, that we, offering the same to thy honour and glory, might receive thereby the healing of all our infirmities: mercifully grant that this our present offering may be made acceptable in thy sight; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

COMMUNION
Proverbs 3

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

POSTCOMMUNION

We humbly beseech thee, O Lord our God, that like as thou ceasest not to renew us with thy heavenly sacraments, so thou wouldest not fail to bestow upon us in all things the succour of thy mercy; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
