The holy martyrs Eulampius and Eulampia, a brother and sister from Nicomedia, lived during the reign of Emperor Maximian, one of the most relentless persecutors of Christians. Eulampius, noted for his devotion to Christ, was arrested after being discovered among a group of Christians studying the Scriptures. His faithfulness immediately drew the wrath of the Roman authorities, who sought to make an example of him.
Upon hearing of her brother’s arrest, Eulampia, driven by her own unwavering love for Christ and for her brother, rushed to the place of trial. When she arrived, she boldly declared her own faith in Christ, refusing to be separated from her brother even in suffering. The authorities, enraged by this defiance, subjected both to a series of severe tortures.
Eulampius was flogged and cast into a burning furnace, from which he emerged unharmed. Eulampia likewise was thrown into boiling pitch, but by the grace of God, she too was miraculously preserved. Undeterred by these failures, the persecutors devised further torments, but the brother and sister remained steadfast, their courage only increasing as they endured their trials together.
Finally, the authorities condemned Eulampius to be beheaded. As he prepared to receive the crown of martyrdom, his sister Eulampia, overcome with grief yet filled with divine peace, prayed to God to receive her soul before the sword could touch her. Her prayer was answered, and she peacefully gave up her spirit at the very moment her brother was executed.
Their witness spread quickly, and the faithful of Nicomedia revered them as powerful intercessors before Christ. Their martyrdom, an example of sibling love united in faith, became a source of strength for persecuted Christians, especially during the era of Maximian’s brutal campaigns. Today, they are remembered for their unwavering courage, the miracles that accompanied their sufferings, and their ultimate victory in Christ.
MARTYRS HYMN
Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee,
received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God.
For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants,
and wholly destroyed the demons’ strengthless presumption.
O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.
Today we celebrate the holy memory of Eulampius and Eulampia,
who with their steadfast brotherly love,
overcame the tempter’s fierce snares
and gained crowns of victory from Christ our God.
COLLECT
Almighty and Everlasting God, who didst enkindle the flame of holy love in the hearts of Thy blessed martyrs Eulampius and Eulampia: Grant unto us, Thy servants, the same faith and fortitude, that we, loving Thee above all things, may endure all trials with patience and joy, through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
