R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

REJOICE we in the Lord, keeping holy-day in honour of all the Saints: in whose solemnity the Angels rejoice and glorify the Son of God.

✠ THE COLLECTS ✠

THE COLLECT OF ALL SAINTS’ DAY

O ALMIGHTY God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord; Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys which thou hast prepared for those who unfeignedly love thee; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF ST. ALFRED THE GREAT, KING AND CONFESSOR

O ALMIGHTY God, who didst endue thy servant Alfred with wisdom to govern thy people, courage to defend them, and zeal to restore among them the knowledge of thy holy Word: Grant that we, following his example, may seek first thy kingdom and righteousness, and employ the gifts committed unto us for the advancement of true religion, sound learning, and the common good; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF ST. JUDE THADDEUS, APOSTLE AND MARTYR

O ALMIGHTY God, who hast built thy Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head corner-stone; Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made an holy temple acceptable unto thee; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COLLECT FOR ALL SOULS’ DAY

O GOD, the Creator and Redeemer of all them that believe: Grant unto the souls of thy servants and handmaidens the remission of all their sins; that as they have ever desired thy merciful pardon, so by the supplications of their brethren they may receive the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

✠ THE LITURGY OF THE WORD ✠

THE FIRST LESSON — THE OLD TESTAMENT

2 Kings 13:20–21

The witness of the Prophet Elisha to the power of God over death.

AND Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.

And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

Reader: Here endeth the First Lesson.

People: Thanks be to God.

THE SECOND LESSON — THE NEW TESTAMENT

Revelation 14:1–5

The Lamb and the redeemed upon the heavenly Mount Sion.

AND I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.

And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:

And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.

And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.

Reader: Here endeth the Second Lesson.

People: Thanks be to God.

THE THIRD LESSON — THE EPISTLE

Revelation 7:2–4, 9–17

The innumerable multitude of the saints before the throne of God.

AND I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,

Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?

And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Reader: Here endeth the Epistle.

People: Thanks be to God.

THE GRADUAL

Psalm 34

FEAR the Lord, ye that are his Saints: for they that fear him lack nothing.

ALLELUIA, alleluia.

Alleluia.

✠ THE HOLY GOSPEL ✠

St. Matthew 5:1–12

The Beatitudes of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Deacon: The Holy Gospel is written in the fifth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, beginning at the first verse.

People: Glory be to thee, O Lord.

JESUS seeing the multitudes, went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

✠ THE OFFERTORY ✠

Wisdom 3

THE souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment touch them: in the sight of the unwise they seemed to die, but they are in peace, alleluia.

THE SECRET

GRANT, we beseech thee, O Lord: that the gifts which we offer unto thee of our bounden duty and service may be acceptable unto thee for the honour of thy Saints; and by thy mercy profitable unto us for our salvation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

✠ THE HOLY COMMUNION ✠

PROPER PREFACE OF ALL SAINTS

WHO, in the multitude of thy Saints, hast compassed us about with so great a cloud of witnesses that we, rejoicing in their fellowship, may run with patience the race that is set before us, and, together with them, may receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Amen.

The Divine Liturgy continues according to the Anaphora and Communion rite of St. James of Jerusalem, as appointed in the St. James Prayerbook.

THE COMMUNION ANTIPHON

St. Matthew 5

BLESSED are the pure in heart, for they shall see God: blessed are the peace-makers, for they shall be called the children of God: blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

THE POSTCOMMUNION

GRANT, O Lord, we pray thee: that thy faithful people may evermore rejoice in the veneration of all thy Saints; and be defended by their perpetual intercession. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

✠ IN COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED ✠

The following may be said or sung in remembrance of those who have departed this life in the faith and fear of Christ.

WITH the Saints give rest, O Christ, to the souls of Thy servants, where there is neither pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.

Among the spirits of the righteous made perfect, grant rest, O Saviour, to Thy servants, preserving them in the blessed life which is from Thee, O Lover of mankind.

In Thy place of rest, O Lord, where all Thy Saints repose, grant rest also unto Thy servants, for Thou only art immortal.

V. Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord.

R. And let light perpetual shine upon them.

V. May they rest in peace.

R. Amen.
