THE 18TH SUNDAY
AFTER TRINITY
INTROIT
Da pacem. Ecclus. 36:16
Give peace, O Lord, unto them that wait for thee, and let thy prophets be
found faithful: hear the prayer of thy servants, and of thy people Israel.
Psalm 122. I was glad when they said unto me: We will go into the house of the
Lord.
V. Glory be to the
Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without
end. Amen.
COLLECTS
Lord, we beseech thee, grant thy people grace to withstand the
temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil; and with pure hearts and
minds to follow thee, the only God. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth
and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
Amen.
Of Good King Wenceslaus
Almighty God, who taught the martyr Saint Wenceslaus to place the
heavenly kingdom before an earthly one: Grant, through his prayers, that,
denying ourselves, we may hold fast to thee with all our heart; through our
Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
Of St. Michael and All Angels
O Almighty God, who hast ordained and constituted in a wondrous order the ministries of Angels and men: Mercifully grant that, as thy holy Angels ever serve thee in heaven, so, by thy command, they may succour and defend us on earth; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
Of St. Romanos the Melodist
O God, who didst grant to thy servant Romanos the Melodist the gift of
sacred song, and didst put upon his lips a hymn of praise to the incarnate
Word: Grant that, instructed by his holy hymns, we may glorify Christ with
humble hearts, and join in the song of the Church on earth and in heaven;
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Of the Holy Guardian Angels
O Almighty God, who in thy merciful providence hast appointed the holy
Angels to minister unto the heirs of salvation: Grant, we beseech thee, that by
their watchful guardianship we may be defended from all perils of body and
soul, strengthened against the assaults of the adversary, and guided faithfully
in the way of thy commandments; that, being preserved by thy grace through the
pilgrimage of this mortal life, we may at the last, with Angels and Archangels
and all the company of heaven, behold thy glory and rejoice before thy throne
for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee
and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
THE LITURGY OF THE
WORD
THE FIRST LESSON
FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
2 Kings 2:1–15
The Lesson is written in the Second Book of the Kings, beginning at the
second chapter, the first verse.
And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a
whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. And Elijah said unto
Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel. And
Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not
leave thee. So they went down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets that were
at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord
will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it;
hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee;
for the Lord hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as
thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. And the sons
of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest
thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he
answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, Tarry,
I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the
Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went
on. And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off:
and they two stood by Jordan. And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it
together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so
that they two went over on dry ground. And it came to pass, when they were gone
over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be
taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy
spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if
thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it
shall not be so. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that,
behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them
both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it,
and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen
thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent
them in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him,
and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; and he took the mantle of
Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord
God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and
thither: and Elisha went over. And when the sons of the prophets which were to
view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha.
And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

THE SECOND LESSON
FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT
Revelation 7:1–17
The Lesson is written in the Revelation of St. John the Divine, beginning
at the seventh chapter, the first verse.
And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of
the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow
on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another angel
ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a
loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the
sea, saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have
sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And I heard the number of
them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four
thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Juda were
sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of
the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Aser were sealed
twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the
tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Simeon were
sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of
the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Zabulon were
sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of
the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.
After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could
number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the
throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their
hands; and cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth
upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and
the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,
saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour,
and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. And one of the
elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white
robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he
said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed
their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they
before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he
that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more,
neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For
the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead
them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from
their eyes.
Here endeth the Lesson. The Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!
THE EPISTLE APPOINTED
FOR THE DAY
1 Corinthians 1:4–8
The Epistle is written in the First Epistle of St. Paul the Apostle to
the Corinthians, beginning at the first chapter, the fourth verse.
I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given
you by Jesus Christ; that in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all
utterance, and in all knowledge; even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed
in you: so that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ: who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless
in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Here endeth the Lesson. The Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!

THE GOSPEL OF OUR
LORD AND SAVIOR
St. Matthew 22:34–46
The Holy Gospel is written in the Gospel according to St. Matthew,
beginning at the twenty-second chapter, the thirty-fourth verse.
When the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence,
they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a
question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in
the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and
great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the
prophets. While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying,
What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The
Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies
thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? And no man was
able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him
any more questions.
