The Holy Feast of All Souls
&
The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed
✠ THE PREPARATION ✠
V. The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God.
R. And there shall no torment touch them.
Collect for Purity
Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
✠ THE INTROIT ✠
Psalm 130:1–7
Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning:
I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy,
and with him is plenteous redemption.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
✠ THE COLLECT ✠
O God, the Maker and Redeemer of all believers: Grant unto the souls of thy servants and handmaids departed the remission of all their sins; that through devout supplications they may obtain the pardon which they have ever desired; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
✠ THE LITURGY OF THE WORD ✠
✠ The First Lesson ✠
Wisdom of Solomon 3:1–9
But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
and there shall no torment touch them.
In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die:
and their departure is taken for misery,
and their going from us to be utter destruction:
but they are in peace.
For though they be punished in the sight of men,
yet is their hope full of immortality.
And having been a little chastised, they shall be greatly rewarded:
for God proved them, and found them worthy for himself.
As gold in the furnace hath he tried them,
and received them as a burnt offering.
And in the time of their visitation they shall shine,
and run to and fro like sparks among the stubble.
They shall judge the nations, and have dominion over the people,
and their Lord shall reign for ever.
They that put their trust in him shall understand the truth:
and such as be faithful in love shall abide with him:
for grace and mercy is to his saints, and he hath care for his elect.
V. The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
✠ The Gradual ✠
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
✠ The Epistle ✠
I Corinthians 15:51–58
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump:
for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality,
then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written,
Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,
forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
V. The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
✠ The Holy Gospel ✠
John 11:21–27
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life:
he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
Believest thou this?
She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God,
which should come into the world.
V. The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise be to Thee, O Christ.
✠ THE LITURGY OF THE FAITHFUL ✠
✠ Offertory ✠
2 Esdras 2:34–35
Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon them.
Let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.
Give rest, O Lord, to thy servants that sleep.
✠ The Secret ✠
Look down, O Lord, we beseech thee, upon the sacrifice which we offer unto thee for the souls of thy servants and handmaids departed; that, being delivered from the bonds of mortal sin, they may be made partakers of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
✠ The Preface ✠
For the Dead
It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: through Jesus Christ our Lord; who by His death hath destroyed death, and by His rising to life again hath restored us to everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying:
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.
Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.
Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
✠ THE CANON OF THE DIVINE LITURGY OF ST. JAMES ✠
Celebrant:
We give thanks to Thee, O Lord our God, for the precious gift of Thy beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom Thou hast revealed unto us the knowledge of Thyself.
Who, when He was about to suffer His saving Passion for us sinners, on the night in which He was betrayed, took bread into His holy, immaculate, and undefiled hands; and when He had given thanks and blessed it, He brake it, and gave it to His disciples, saying:
TAKE, EAT, THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU AND FOR MANY, FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.
Likewise also, after supper, He took the cup; and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying:
DRINK YE ALL OF THIS, FOR THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY, FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS, AS OFT AS YE SHALL DRINK IT, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.
Remembering therefore His saving Passion, and His life-giving Cross, His three-day burial and Resurrection from the dead, His Ascension into Heaven, and His sitting at the right hand of Thee, O God and Father, and His glorious and terrible second coming, we offer unto Thee Thine own of Thine own, in all and for all.
V. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we give thanks unto Thee, O Lord, and we pray unto Thee, our God.
Send down Thy Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts here set forth,
that by His holy, good, and glorious coming, He may sanctify this Bread and make it the precious Body of Christ,
and this Cup the precious Blood of Christ,
changing them by Thy Holy Spirit.
That they may become unto us for sanctification, the remission of sins,
and the resurrection unto everlasting life for all who partake of them in faith and charity.
We offer unto Thee, O Lord, this reasonable and unbloody sacrifice for all those who in faith have gone before us in the hope of resurrection unto life eternal—patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs, confessors, ascetics, and every righteous spirit made perfect in faith.
Especially remembering the holy, glorious, and ever-blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and ever-virgin; Saint James the Apostle, the Brother of the Lord; and all thy saints,
that by their prayers and intercessions we may find mercy and grace in Thy sight.
We remember also, O Lord, the souls of Thy servants and handmaids departed this life in Thy faith and fear—especially those whom we this day commemorate, and all the faithful departed, known and unknown—grant them rest, O Lord, in a place of light, refreshment, and peace,
where all sickness, sorrow, and sighing are fled away.
V. Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord.
R. And let light perpetual shine upon them.
Remember, O Lord, Thy Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, from one end of the earth to the other;
grant unto her peace and stability;
remember our bishops and clergy, our monastics and faithful;
and all who offer unto Thee this holy and unbloody sacrifice for themselves and for all the living.
Unite us all in one mind and one heart, and grant that we may partake of Thy holy mysteries with a clean conscience, for the healing of soul and body, for forgiveness of sins, and for life everlasting.
Grant, O Lord, that this sacrifice may be acceptable unto Thee for all those whom Thou hast called from this life;
and bring us all, when our course is finished, into Thy heavenly kingdom,
where with all Thy saints we may behold the light of Thy countenance,
and give Thee glory for ever and ever.
Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord:
By Whom and with Whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost,
all honour and glory be unto Thee, O Father Almighty,
world without end. Amen.
✠ The Lord’s Prayer ✠
And now, as our Saviour Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
✠ The Fraction ✠
Celebrant: The Bread which we break is the Communion of the Body of Christ.
People: The Cup which we bless is the Communion of the Blood of Christ.

(Communion is then distributed to the faithful.)
✠ Postcommunion ✠

✠ The Collect after the Litany ✠
O Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed
from the pains of hell and from the deep pit;
deliver them from the lion’s mouth,
that hell swallow them not up,
and that they fall not into darkness.
But let Michael, the holy standard-bearer, bring them into the holy light;
which thou didst promise of old to Abraham and to his seed.
And grant, O Lord, that we who offer unto thee prayers and sacrifices of praise
may by thy mercy be joined with them in the inheritance of the saints in light;
through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost,
one God, world without end. Amen.

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,
be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen.
