ST. STYLIANOS THE PROTECTOR OF CHILDREN (NOV. 26TH)

St. Stylianos the Paphlagonian in a 19th Century Greek Icon

Edited by Bp. Joseph (Ancient Church of the West

In the land of Paphlagonia, amidst the rolling hills of Asia Minor, there arose in the fourth century a radiant light of holiness, Stylianos the Monk. Born into wealth, young Stylianos learned early that the treasures of this world are fleeting. Upon the death of his parents, he renounced the inheritance they left him, distributing all to the poor and needy, embodying the words of our Lord: "Sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven" (Luke 18:22).

Seeking greater intimacy with Christ, Stylianos withdrew to a monastery, but his zeal for asceticism and purity of heart provoked the envy of his brethren. Perceiving that his path lay elsewhere, Stylianos departed into the wilderness, taking refuge in a cave where he devoted himself entirely to prayer, fasting, and contemplation of the divine mysteries.

Yet, as the light of a lamp cannot be hidden, so too was Stylianos’ sanctity revealed. People from the surrounding villages came to him, drawn by his reputation for holiness and his gift of healing. Many who suffered from physical ailments and torments of the soul found peace through his fervent prayers.

Among his many acts of compassion, Stylianos became especially renowned for his love and care for children. His prayers restored the health of many ailing little ones, and his tender intercession brought hope to childless couples. Even after his repose, his icon became a source of healing, hung lovingly over the beds of sick children.

On the day of his passing, the cave where he had lived was filled with an unearthly light. Those who were present beheld his face shining with divine radiance as an angel descended to carry his soul into the presence of the Lord.

Today, Saint Stylianos remains a symbol of purity, compassion, and trust in God’s providence. His icon, often depicting him cradling a child in his arms, is cherished by parents and children alike. His intercession is sought by mothers longing for children and by all who labor to protect the innocence and well-being of the young.

COLLECT

O God, who didst endue Thy servant Stylianos with heavenly gifts of charity and healing, and didst make him a guardian of the innocent and a comfort to the sorrowful: Grant, we beseech Thee, that through his prayers and holy example, we may be inspired to love Thee above all things and to care tenderly for those in need; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
