Disciple Song
Fr. Anthony El Lazarus, Anchorite Monk in the Coptic Church, Near St. Anthony's Original Monastery |
Hearing past the noise
Praying past the flashing ads
Getting to the heart of silence
The martyr’s peace amidst the passing fads
The discipline of fasting
Restraining eyes from the riot of color
Mouth from the pleasant taste of food
Untie the soul from the sensual
And open up the senses to an eternal good
God’s voice is still and quiet
The louder the world the less we hear
The pace of modern life leaves blank
The space marked for giving thanks
And we live ignorant of what to fear
The Word is a vocabulary
Given to the conscience to speak inside
So that when the spirit moves you
You find a still and quite voice by your side
Be still and know
That God is alive
Seek Him in the spirit
So the spirit can survive!
