THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY (SEPT. 21ST)

MISSAL MASS PROPERS ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE DIVINE LITURGY OF ST. JAMES IN THE ANCIENT CHURCH OF THE WEST

INTROIT
PSALM 84

Behold, O God, our defender, and look upon the face of thine Anointed: for one day in thy courts is better than a thousand. O how amiable are thy dwellings, thou Lord of hosts; my soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

COLLECTS

Almighty and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty and everlasting God, Who called Thy servant St. Ninian to preach Thy holy gospel to the people of northern Britain: raise up in this and every land heralds and evangelists of Thy kingdom, that Thy Holy Church may make known the immeasurable riches of Thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ, Who livest and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen

O God, whose Bishop Theodore was called to England to set the Church on a firm foundation: by his prayers, build us always anew on the rock that is Christ; and keep thy household faithful to the call we have received; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O Almighty God, who didst inspire thy holy Evangelist St. Matthew to write of the Incarnation of thy Son and to proclaim Him as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets; Grant us grace to heed his witness, and through the same Spirit that moved him to write, may we ever proclaim the Gospel in word and deed, that all the nations may come to the knowledge of thy saving love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O Almighty God, who didst strengthen Thy servant Mar Zaia to witness boldly to the truth of Thy Holy Gospel, to guide Thy people as a New Moses, and to endure martyrdom with unwavering faith; Grant that we, following his example, may renounce the idols of this world and apostate generation, and with steadfast hearts serve Thee alone, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON
LEVITICUS 25:1–18

And the Lord spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the Lord. Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof; but in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the Lord: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard. That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land. And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee, and for thy cattle, and for the beast that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat.

And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. A jubilee shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed. For it is the jubilee; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field. In the year of this jubilee ye shall return every man unto his possession.

And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest ought of thy neighbour’s hand, ye shall not oppress one another. According to the number of years after the jubilee thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee. According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee. Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am the Lord your God. Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety.

EPISTLE
GALATIANS 5:16–24

Brethren: I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

GRADUAL
PSALM 118 AND 95

It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put any confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put any confidence in princes. Alleluia, alleluia. O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
ST. LUKE 17:11–19

At that time: It came to pass, as Jesus went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off. And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go, show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed.

And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
