OBSERVING HOLY AND GREAT LENT

IN A TIME OF TRIAL FOR UKRAINE

A Pastoral Reflection from the Orthodox Archdiocese of America

As the Church enters the sacred season of Holy and Great Lent, we are reminded that the path of repentance, sacrifice, and prayer also calls us to remember those who suffer. In this time of conflict and hardship in Ukraine, the faithful are invited to unite their Lenten discipline with prayer for peace, justice, and the preservation of human life.
1. FASTING WITH COMPASSION

The fast is not merely abstinence from food, but a turning of the heart toward God and toward our neighbor. During this Lent, we offer our fasting as an act of compassion for the people of Ukraine and for all who endure the sorrow of war.
2. REPENTANCE AND NATIONAL HEALING

Lent calls every Christian to repentance. As we seek the healing of our own souls, we also pray for the healing of nations, asking that violence may cease and that truth and reconciliation may prevail.
3. SHARING IN THE CROSS

The suffering of the innocent reminds us of the Cross of Christ. In prayer and humility we stand spiritually beside those who bear heavy burdens, remembering that the Cross is never without the promise of resurrection.
4. MERCY THROUGH ALMSGIVING

The Church teaches that fasting must be joined with acts of mercy. Let our almsgiving support those displaced by conflict, the wounded, the grieving, and those who labor to bring relief and care.
5. PRAYING FOR THE VICTORY OF GOOD

Christ is the Light that no darkness can overcome. We pray fervently that His light will overcome hatred, fear, and destruction, and that peace may again flourish in the lands afflicted by war.
6. THE STRUGGLE OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE

Great Lent is a time of spiritual warfare against sin, despair, and temptation. As we struggle for holiness in our own lives, we lift up all who struggle for their lives, safety, and freedom.
7. REMEMBERING THE DISPLACED

Many families have been separated from their homes and homeland. Let us remember refugees and exiles in our prayers, asking God to grant protection, shelter, and the hope of safe return.
8. HOPE IN THE RESURRECTION

Even in the darkest hours of history, the Church proclaims that death does not have the final word. The Resurrection of Christ assures us that suffering will not endure forever and that renewal is possible.
9. SERVING IN HUMILITY

The humility of Christ guides our response to suffering. We are called to serve through prayer, charity, and advocacy for peace, remembering that the smallest act of love is never forgotten by God.
10. PRAYING FOR TRUE PEACE

Our Lord declared, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” We therefore pray not only for an end to war, but for a just and lasting peace founded upon righteousness, truth, and reconciliation among peoples.

May this Holy and Great Lent renew our hearts, strengthen our faith, and unite us in prayer for peace, healing, and the triumph of Christ’s light over every darkness.
