OBSERVING HOLY AND GREAT LENT IN A TIME OF TRIAL FOR THE LANDS OF THE APOSTLES

A Pastoral Reflection from the Orthodox Archdiocese of America and a Meditation on the Suffering of Our Christian Brothers and Sisters in the Middle East

As the Church enters the sacred season of Holy and Great Lent, we remember that repentance, fasting, and prayer unite the faithful across all nations. The lands of the Middle East are not only the setting of today’s conflicts, but also the sacred places where the Gospel was first proclaimed by the Apostles. From Jerusalem to Antioch, from Damascus to Mesopotamia and Persia, the light of Christ once spread throughout the world. In this time of war and uncertainty, we unite our Lenten prayers with the faithful who endure hardship in these lands and we ask God that His light may once again shine brightly there.

1. FASTING IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE LANDS OF THE APOSTLES

The fast reminds us that the Church is one Body in Christ. During this Lent, we offer our fasting for the peoples of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Gaza, and the surrounding lands, asking God to preserve life and protect the innocent.

2. REPENTANCE AND THE HEALING OF NATIONS

Lent calls every Christian to repentance. As we humble our hearts before God, we pray that the leaders of nations may turn away from hatred and violence, and that wisdom, justice, and reconciliation may prevail.

3. REMEMBERING JERUSALEM, THE MOTHER CHURCH

Jerusalem is the city of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection and the place where the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. We remember the faithful who live in this holy land and pray that the city of peace may again become a place of reconciliation.

4. REMEMBERING ANTIOCH, WHERE CHRISTIANS WERE FIRST CALLED BY THAT NAME

In Antioch the disciples were first called Christians (Acts 11:26), and from that great apostolic center the Gospel spread across the world. We pray for the Christians of Syria and Lebanon who continue to bear witness to Christ amid suffering and uncertainty.

5. REMEMBERING DAMASCUS, THE CITY OF CONVERSION

On the road to Damascus the persecutor Saul encountered the risen Christ and became the Apostle Paul (Acts 9). We pray that the same transforming grace of God may bring repentance, reconciliation, and peace to hearts hardened by conflict.

6. REMEMBERING MESOPOTAMIA AND THE CHURCH OF THE EAST

From the earliest centuries, the Gospel flourished in Mesopotamia and Persia, spreading from Edessa and Nineveh across Asia. We remember the Christians of Iraq and Iran, heirs of these ancient apostolic traditions, and pray that their faith may be strengthened and preserved.

7. PRAYING FOR THE FAITHFUL REMNANT

Across the Middle East remain small but faithful Christian communities whose witness stretches back to the Apostles themselves. We pray that God will protect and strengthen them so that their ancient traditions and courageous faith may endure.

8. MERCY FOR THE SUFFERING AND DISPLACED

True fasting must be joined with mercy. Let us remember the refugees, the wounded, the grieving, and the displaced, asking the Lord to comfort them and to raise up many who will show compassion and charity.

9. PRAYING FOR THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL

The lands of the Middle East were once the cradle of the Christian faith. We therefore pray that the light of the Gospel may once again shine throughout these lands, and that those who have not yet heard the saving message of Christ may come to know His truth, mercy, and love.

10. PRAYING FOR TRUE AND LASTING PEACE

Our Lord declared, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Therefore we pray for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, where reconciliation, truth, and mercy may prevail among all peoples.
May this Holy and Great Lent renew our hearts in repentance, strengthen the ancient Christian communities of the Middle East, and bring the light of Christ to all who dwell in the lands where the Apostles first proclaimed the Gospel.
