THE COLLECTS

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities: and in all our dangers and necessities, stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O ALMIGHTY God, who hast raised up in every age faithful witnesses to Thy truth;
who didst bless Thy servant Priscilla, that in marriage and labor she might advance Thy Gospel;
who gavest courage and holy boldness to Wulfstan, Thy bishop, to comfort the oppressed and proclaim true freedom in Christ; who didst strengthen Sebastian and Agnes, Thy holy martyrs, to obey Thee rather than men, and to confess Thy Name unto death; and who didst preserve the Orthodox Faith through the suffering and confession of Maximos the Confessor in times of trial and division:Grant unto us, we beseech Thee, the same spirit of fidelity, fortitude, and truth; that in our several callings we may serve Thee without fear, contend earnestly for the faith once delivered unto the saints, and remain steadfast unto the end; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who didst call Timothy to the ministry of the Gospel and the oversight of Thy Church; who by Thy mighty grace didst convert Paul the Apostle, making him a chosen vessel to bear Thy Name before the nations; and who by the power of the Holy Ghost didst rescue and regenerate Muirgen, giving her new birth in Holy Baptism, a new name, and a place among Thy saints: Grant that we, instructed by apostolic teaching, renewed by true repentance, and strengthened by Thy Holy Sacraments, may fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, and enter at last into the joy and rest of Thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON. Joshua 4:19–24; 5:1; 6:1–5.

And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho. And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal. And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. For the Lord your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over: That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever.

5:1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

6:1 Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in. And the Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valour. Ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.

THE TESTAMENT LESSON. Hebrews 1.

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

THE EPISTLE: Romans 12:16-21b
Brethren: Be not wise in your own conceits.
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

GRADUAL. Psalm 102.

The heathen shall fear thy Name, O Lord: and all the kings of the earth thy majesty.

V. When the Lord shall build up Sion: and when his glory shall appear.

Alleluia, alleluia.

V. Psalm 97. The Lord is King, the earth may be glad thereof: yea, the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof.

Alleluia.

THE HOLY GOSPEL. Saint John 2:1–11.

And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

THE LITURGY OF THE FAITHFUL

OFFERTORY. Psalm 118.

The right hand of the Lord hath the pre-eminence, the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass: I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.

SECRET.

GRANT, O Lord, we pray thee, that this oblation may in such wise cleanse us from all our sins: that we thy servants, being sanctified both in body and soul, may worthily offer unto thee this our sacrifice; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

COMMUNION. Saint John 2.

The Lord saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water, and bear unto the governor of the feast. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, he saith unto the bridegroom, Thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus before his disciples.

POSTCOMMUNION.

O LORD, who hast vouchsafed unto us to be made partakers of so great a mystery; we humbly beseech thee, that thou wouldest render us worthy thereby to enjoy the benefits of the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
