LITURGICAL PROPERS FOR THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PASCHA ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE ANCIENT CHURCH OF THE WEST'S DIVINE LITURGY OF ST. JAMES OF JERUSALEM
INTROIT: CANTATE DOMINO - PSALM 98
O sing unto the Lord a new song, alleluia: for the Lord hath done marvellous things, alleluia: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. With his own right hand and with his holy arm: hath he gotten himself the victory. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
COLLECTS
O ALMIGHTY GOD, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men: grant unto thy people that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed, where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O ALMIGHTY GOD, who didst raise up thy servant Ethelhard to be a faithful bishop and restorer of thy Church in troubled times: grant that we, strengthened by his example and aided by his prayers, may contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints, and endure hardship for thy Name’s sake, through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
O ALMIGHTY GOD, who hast offered us this day to commemorate thy most holy Saint, Confessor, Abbot, and Navigator, the Blessed Brendan: grant that we, upheld by his holy prayers, may glory in all of thy mercies, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT READING: EXODUS 15:1-6, 11-13
Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name. Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea. The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone. Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them. Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.
NEW TESTAMENT READING: ACTS 2:1-4, 14-18
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will maggioranza pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.
EPISTLE: ST. JAMES 1:17-21
Dearly beloved: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
ALLELUIA
Alleluia, alleluia. The right hand of the Lord hath the pre-eminence: the right hand of the Lord bringeth mighty things to pass. Alleluia. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more: death hath no more dominion over him. Alleluia.
THE HOLY GOSPEL: ST. JOHN 16:5-15
At that time, Jesus said unto his disciples: Now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you.
OFFERTORY: PSALM 66
O be joyful in God, all ye lands, sing praises unto the honour of his Name: O come hither, and hearken, all ye that fear God, and I will tell you what the Lord hath done for my soul. Alleluia.
SECRET
O God, who by the wondrous operation of this sacrifice hast made us partakers of thy glorious Godhead: grant, we beseech thee, that we which are taught the knowledge of thy truth, may in all our conversation walk worthily of the same, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
COMMUNION: ST. JOHN 16:8, 13
When the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment, alleluia, alleluia. He will guide you into all truth, alleluia.
POSTCOMMUNION
Assist us mercifully, O Lord our God: that we, which have in faithfulness received this holy Sacrament, may thereby be cleansed from all our iniquities, and delivered from all dangers that beset us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
