On Reading Divine Books

Ancient Syriac Manuscript Illustration of Mar Jacob of Serugh

Divine readings are of great wealth,
The soul enriches it if it approaches them with passion.
They are like a source against the thirst of the world,
Anyone who is thirsty can drink from it every day.

Divine books are blessed fountains,
O thirsty come and drink living water.
If rivers and rivers exist to drink bodies and animals,
divine readings, they, are there for the souls.

O wise man, give your body water to drink,
But also give your soul a book to read and rejoice in it.
At the source buried in the books, the thirsty soul comes
shut your mouth and water it every day.

The worries of this evil world hurt the soul
Which one is responsible for disturbances and flaunting convos.
A great illusion stands in front of her like a smoke screen,
She blinds him and prevents him from seeing well.

The love of the world provides for the soul in order to darken it,
This one goes blind when she is a prisoner of body convoy.
But if she manages to open a book and dive into it with a lot of passion,
Immediately she illuminated and perceived beauties so far that she is incomparable.

The light that comes from reading penetrates the mind,
Like a ray of sunshine in the apple of the eye.
The wind of the book that moves from between its lines, rises
And immediately chase away the smoke of illusion from the mind.

Plus the soul attaches with passion to reading,
The more she purifies herself and fills herself with unstoppable light.
So the Malin burns himself with jealousy and strikes immediately like an avenger,
In order to eliminate the book through the troubling occupations of this world.

If the soul attaches passionately to reading,
she will reject and despise all occupation, even the title of reading.
But if the love of the world increases, the reading will stop,
Occupations will enter; and the world will end, but these will not end.

O soul that wants to live pleasantly with God,
be passionate about divine reading;
Abolish the disturbing worries of this world,
Stop them and chase them out of your thoughts.

Listen to the book that punctures vices and cures evils,
It heals thoughts and restores soul health.
