An Anglo-Orthodox Reflection for Armistice Day (November 11th)

Honoring Our Veterans: Guardians of Freedom and Faith

Today, as we reflect on the sacrifices of veterans from both World Wars, we are reminded of the profound cost of peace and liberty. These brave men and women stood against the great evils of their time—Fascism, Communism, and other forces that sought to extinguish freedom and faith. They risked everything, enduring unimaginable trials, so that future generations might enjoy safety and religious liberty.

The Church has long recognized the moral complexity of war, yet Scripture affirms the necessity of just defense against oppression and the slaughter of the innocent. As Ecclesiastes says, “To everything there is a season… a time for war, and a time for peace” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 8). St. Augustine spoke of “just war” as a tragic but sometimes necessary means of upholding justice and defending the innocent.

We also remember those who bear the scars of war - physical, emotional, and spiritual. Their wounds remind us of the brokenness of this world and the need for God’s healing grace. As the Psalmist declares, “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).

This Armistice and Veterans Day, let us honor their sacrifice not only in gratitude but also by safeguarding the freedoms they fought to preserve. May we remain vigilant against ideologies that deny the dignity of the human person and the sovereignty of God. Let us pray for peace, but also for the courage to defend it when necessary, always trusting in Christ, the Prince of Peace.

Let us never forget: the liberty we enjoy today was purchased with the blood of those who stood firm in the face of tyranny. May their memory be eternal, and may their sacrifices inspire us to live as faithful stewards of the freedom they secured.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

THE COLLECT

Almighty God, we give Thee thanks for the veterans of both World Wars, who fought for our freedom and the establishment of peace, for their willingness to risk all hazards, so that many nation might dwell in peace and safety. May they receive great spiritual rewards for their great sacrifice. We pray for those who have suffered through physical, spiritual, and mental wounds, that they might know Thy healing power. We pray for free nations, that they may treasure religious liberties which were won by the spilt blood of these faithful protectors, who have waged just war for the protection of God-loving nations against Atheism, Communism, Socialism and Fascism. Grant this in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen!
