THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT (DEC 3RD)

By Bp. Joseph Boyd (Ancient  Church of the West

This Sunday marks the first Sunday of Advent, a fast in preparation for the Feast of Nativity, and a time of prayer, reflection, stillness, and winter quiet. We also give to the poor during our fast, hence the tradition of Christmas gift giving that developed in the West. As with everything in the Christian Tradition, this fast is an excellent opportunity to make special time for God and to remember that “Jesus is the reason for the season.”

As we take time to pray and anticipate the Mystery of the Incarnation, let us incarnate the good works that the Holy Spirit would have us do, turning away from pride, anger, strife, greed and lust, and turning towards Christ with repentance and faith, manifesting the Fruits of the Spirit!

Blessed fast!
