MISSAL MASS PROPERS FOR THE DIVINE LITURGY OF SAINT JAMES OF JERUSALEM
ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE ANCIENT CHURCH OF THE WEST
INTROIT – Suscepimus (Psalm 48)
We have waited for thy loving-kindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple: O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the world’s end: thy right hand is full of righteousness. Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised: in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. We have waited for thy loving-kindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple: O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the world’s end: thy right hand is full of righteousness.
COLLECT FOR THE EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
O God, whose never-failing providence ordereth all things both in heaven and earth: We humbly beseech thee to put away from us all hurtful things, and to give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
COLLECT FOR THE FEAST OF THE HOLY TRANSFIGURATION
O God, who on the holy mount didst reveal to chosen witnesses thy well-beloved Son wonderfully transfigured, in raiment white and glistering; Mercifully grant that we, being delivered from the disquietude of this world, may by faith behold the King in his beauty, and be changed into the same image from glory to glory; through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
COLLECT FOR SAINT MARI OF MESOPOTAMIA, ENLIGHTENER OF THE EAST
O Almighty and everlasting God, who by thy servant Saint Mari didst cause the light of the Gospel to shine among the nations of the East, bringing the knowledge of thy salvation unto those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death; Grant, we beseech thee, that following his example in faith and steadfastness, we may proclaim thy truth with boldness, and persevere unto the end in the confession of thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
COLLECT FOR SAINT OSWALD OF NORTHUMBRIA, KING AND SAINT IN OUR HOLY PATRIMONY
O God, who didst call thy servant Oswald from an earthly kingdom to the glory of a heavenly crown, and madest him a defender of the Faith and a patron of the poor; Grant that we, being stedfast in our confession and generous in our charity, may be made partakers with him of the inheritance of the saints in light; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
OLD TESTAMENT LESSON – Leviticus 3:1–17
And if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offer it of the herd; whether it be a male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron’s sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about. And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire unto the Lord; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away. And Aaron’s sons shall burn it on the altar upon the burnt sacrifice, which is upon the wood that is on the fire: it is an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord.
And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace offering unto the Lord be of the flock; male or female, he shall offer it without blemish. If he offer a lamb for his offering, then shall he offer it before the Lord. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron’s sons shall sprinkle the blood thereof round about upon the altar. And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire unto the Lord; the fat thereof, and the whole rump, it shall he take off hard by the backbone; and the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away. And the priest shall burn it upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire unto the Lord.
And if his offering be a goat, then he shall offer it before the Lord. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of it, and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the blood thereof upon the altar round about. And he shall offer thereof his offering, even an offering made by fire unto the Lord; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away. And the priest shall burn them upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire for a sweet savour: all the fat is the Lord’s. It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood.
NEW TESTAMENT LESSON – 1 Corinthians 10:1–17
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and did all eat the same spiritual meat; and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
EPISTLE – Romans 8:12–17
Brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
GRADUAL – Psalm 31
Be thou my strong rock and house of defence, that thou mayest save me. In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
ALLELUIA – Psalm 48
Alleluia, alleluia. Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised: in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. Alleluia.
THE HOLY GOSPEL – Saint Matthew 7:15–21
At that time Jesus said to his disciples: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
OFFERTORY – Psalm 18
Thou shalt save the people that are in adversity, O Lord, and shalt bring down the high looks of the proud: for who is God, but the Lord?
SECRET
O God, who didst ratify the manifold sacrifices of the law by the one perfect sacrifice of our redemption: mercifully accept the oblation of thy bounden servants, and sanctify them with that benediction wherewith thou didst bless the gifts of Abel thy servant; that what each hath offered to the honour of thy majesty may be profitable unto all for their salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
COMMUNION – Psalm 34
O taste and see how gracious the Lord is: blessed is he that putteth his trust in him.
POSTCOMMUNION
Grant, O Lord, that the power of thy healing may mercifully cleanse us from all our perversities: and lead us henceforth in the paths of righteousness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
